K-12 Science Teaching Institute

2002 Instructors and Participants

The K-12 Science Teaching Institute at Nebraska Wesleyan University is made possible by a 2001-2004 grant from HHMI to provide an outreach program for Nebraska K-12 math (elementary-middle school) and science teachers from Class C and D schools. This is the third time (1993-1996, 1997-2000) NWU has received a four-year grant from HHMI to train teachers. Secondary science teachers are often the only science person in their high school--and sometimes even their junior high school. Out of necessity, these science teachers must teach certain science courses for which they have no endorsement to teach. This is also the case for elementary-middle school teachers in math and science consequently the training has been expanded from 7-12 to a K-12, Math, Science and Instructional Technology Institute.

The primary focus of this outreach program is to assist participants by providing a better knowledge in math, science and technology and inexpensive hands-on tools (which they take home) and computer software for teaching math and science in order to increase student interest and understanding of interdisciplinary concepts and relationships. The participants and instructors will also form a network for sharing math, science and technology information through email and the HHMI web site.
